Can the Hotspot gateway be placed on a different machine than the AP? Can the Hotspot gateway serve multiple APs? Do the APs have to be MT boxes? or can they be pretty much anything that just uses the hotspot box as its gateway addy?

It is more flexible to use HotSpot on the main AP.
HotSpot can serve multiple APs, multiple APs should act as transparent bridge between HotSpot and connected clients.
User Manager or RADIUS server might help you to centralize your HotSpots, in other words you can use one remote RADIUS server, that will contain the same database and accounting data for the many HotSpots.
my suggestion is much better when main AP will supply wireless only and make transparant network to other client. than will make PC router for any services and all networks or user management.
i think about that, all assumsy starting to build larger network.
