I’ve set up a hotspot, it works well, except on some computers.
I have a very strange problem: some of the clients cannot resolve the name of the hotspot gateway.
Ping -->Cannot resolve the name, error
BUT!!!
nslookup -->WORKS
ip -a -->WORKS, gives back the name.
I have no idea for that. Reverse DNS ok, nslookup ok, but the browser cannot resolve the name.
ANY OTHER DNS REQUEST WORKS WELL. Ping works well.
I have a dot in the name (“fagus.hotspot”). I tried to change the name, no success…
It seems that the problem could be related to ipv6, because on the clients there were ipv6 protocoll installed. But after disabling it the problem remained…
Run a protocol analyser (e.g. Ethereal) on the PC. That way you can check the query and the reply. Compare the result to what you get on a PC that works. Some spyware messes with the PC DNS settings but this should be easy to spot from examining the packets.
