Hotspot Idle Timeout problem. Please advise.

Hi guys,

We have a CCR-1036 running on V6.33.3. We use it as a hotspot at a university hostel for about 400 users.

Our objective:-

  1. Captive Portal
  2. Shared user per profile : 3 (3 Device per user)
  3. Limit 3Mbps bandwidth per device

Users have been complaining about having to relogin every 10 minutes. This was due to the short idle timeout (5 minutes). We extended to 30 minutes and users are still complaining that they need to relogin frequently.

So we decided to extend to 8 hours. The problem with 8 hours is that if users forgot to log out, their session remains active.
If their session remains active, they have problem logging in to 3 devices. They may only login to 1 or 2 devices because the “active” session which they forgot to logout earlier is still alive. It returns a “simultaneous session limit reached” error which is understandable.

Any idea how to solve this issue? Ideally having a longer idle timeout and mikrotik able to terminate a session if user forgets to logout.

Tested the keep-alive timeout, doesn’t seem to have an effect. (Tested with 5 minutes)
