Would the DHCP lease timeout affect the hotpot users if the idle time out is greater?
We setup the Hotspot server idle timeout to 2 days and the DHCP lease timeout to 12hrs. Could we potentially see any problems with this setup.
Let’s say the guest (mac address D0:22:BE:D9:64:36) connects to the network and gets IP 10.10.10.10 and logs into the hotspot. The guest then leaves, and 12hrs later someone else gets the same IP. Would they be able to log into the hotspot? the idle timeout is 2 days and the previous host mac address D0:22:BE:D9:64:36 would still be link to IP 10.10.10.10 for the next 1day 12hrs. Would the old host be replace with the new host, or the guest would not be able to log in?
Under normal circumstances, if a guest looses their DHCP lease (it expires before the timeout), they are also logged out of the hotspot. That guest that leaves for 12 hours will be signed out at the 12 hour mark by the router.
If the goal of a 2 day idle/session timeout is to make it so guests do not need to sign in again too often within their stay, it would be better to increase the time of the DHCP lease. If you are worried about running out of addresses, you can always increase the pool size and subnet on the LAN as well. We usually run a /21 on most locations for a hotspot LAN, even though we rarely need that many addresses.
so even if I setup 2 days idle timeout on the hotspot. The device would be logged out, if they loose their DHCP lease?
…I just want to make sure I got it right
I did increase the subnet size to /22, but we ran out of IPs in a week. I’ll try /21
