Hotspot users experience lower throughput

Hello guys,

So I set up a hotspot and did not put any rate limits on either the hotspot profile, nor the hotspot user profiles.
I also set up another interface to do a simple nat (home router style.. so no user auth)
Using a RB150 with RouterOS 2.9.50

Doing a speed test:
DNS servers working good.
I downloaded a large file from a site with reasonable throughput (kernel.org and mirrors).

Connected to the hotspot I had 60Kbps continuous download speed
Connected to the “simple nat” interface, and got 400Kbps continuous download speed
Connected directly to the cable modem (bypassing RB150), and got 600Kbps continuous download speed

As you can see, the hotspot seems to have a much lower throughput, but I’m uncertain what could be in the way.. could it be something like the default queues?

Hi Guys,

It’s cool if you don’t have time to help me debug my config. But here’s all I need to know for now.

If you have a RB133 or RB150 in hotspot mode, what’s the typical maximum sustained throughput you can get when downloading a large file via ftp/http?

Thanks a bunch

Greetings!

I have a RB133 here set up as a hotspot. I just ran a few bandwidth tests and I show less speed difference than I expected.

I used a second server on my ‘local’ wan (different wan IP, but same netmask) as the download server. Using FTP, I downloaded a 1.94MB file in 5 seconds. 802.11g, 48m connection speed, very close (approx 50’) to AP.

Ran a second test. I found it takes a second to connect to the FTP server because of heavy traffic. Throughput shows 660KB/sec during the actual file transfer.
