Hotspot (VAP) & WLAN (normal interface) have DHCP proble

Hi all!

I’ve setup about 12 similar setups the past month, where I use one distribution antenna with a Virtual AP for the Hotspot and the normal interface for the client’s WLAN. I use Static WEP for the WLAN, but no security on the hotspot.

10 of the 12 installations works like a MegaTik, but 2 of the, experience DHCP problems. Clients connecting to the WLAN will not obtain IP’s from the DHCP server. If you enter static IPs, everything works. Funny enough the Hotspot works (also takes longer than usual, but it works). I tried making the WLAN the VAP, and the Hotspot the main interface, same problem.

I used 2.9.35 for the first 10 setup’s, but when I did the 11th one I had the problem for the first time. So I took the normal solution and installed the latest ROS, 2.9.38. It didn’t fix the problem. It is not a signal issue.

My question, is there possibly a bug on the later versions, or could it be hardware problems?

I am also running Usermanager on all 12 of these setup’s. Most are RB112’s, but there are also RB532’s. I only had the problems on RB112’s.

Please guide me in the right direction, as both these clients needs their hotspots for the festive season.

Kind regards, Giepie

User-Manager + HotSpot on the same RB112 ?
RB112 is designed for CPE, it is not designed to run HotSpot + User Manager, you can check for the used resources (/system resource monitor).
As well what is the reason to use 12 separate User Managers ?
You can use one centralized User Manager, that all HotSpots will contact User Manager server for authentication and accounting information.

oh....thanks
so sorry friend i don't have RB112, maybe later...will buy
our AAA centalized by userman on x86, and other RB5xx for unwire only..

Hi all! Sorry for taking so long to respond.

sergejs, I know I only need one usermanager, I have done it for one of the 12 hotspots. They are all different clients 100’s of kilometers away from each other. Each client needs their own usermanager. For the one client we have 3x RB112’s, and one of them are the usermanager too. That site happens to work 100%. It’s only two of the latest hotspot’s Ive setup which wont work when you have a VAP and normal AP running hotspot on the one interface, and normal WLAN on the other.

Regarding the resources, the CPU is running at about 5-20% most of the time, and there’s more than enough diskspace left. I don’t think it’s a resource problem.

If you guys recon it could be that the RB112’s CPU is too little, then I’ll try the same setup with a RB532.

I really wish MT would release a nice board with say 8 miniPCI slots and 3-5 ethernet ports with something like a P3 500 CPU. I know might be a problem for Solar Panel HS’s, but for normal HS’s it would really make a huge diff.

If anyone has any more idea’s, please pop me a msg. For now I’ll try the RB532 option. I’m going on leave till the 8th, then I’ll give it a bash.

Re, G

Check the RAM, RB112 is not designed to run HotSpot + User Manager simultaneously.
RB500 should act better.

We purchased a couple of RB532A’s (for those who doesn’t know, it comes with a 400MHZ or 399MHz CPU). I think this will ROCK!

Will post an update once I’ve tried it.
