HOTSPOT VS PPPOE

Hello,

please suggest what is the better option Hotspot or PPPOE with i can monitor and also tell me the PCC feature is better with Hotspot or PPPOE?

Arman

One is not really better than the other, it comes down to what goals you have for your setup and what you require.

Hotspot is designed for ad hoc situations, where you cannot control how the client has their machines configured. This is generally used in hospitality and restaurants since people will come and go and you have few permanent users.

PPPoE assumes that the clients you have are semi regular so you can afford to take the time to work with them to configure their computers to use your service since they will continue to pay to use the service.

Hello Fekler,

Thanks for your reply,

i am setting up a Network to provide prepaid internet services to clients through wire after some time i will install Wireless AP to provide services through wireless.
what i want is that users have their user name and password to connect to the internet. and charge their account via recharge voucher or whatever.
and what kind of mikrotik setup i want is that:
multiple wan links support. (with PPPOE or with Hotspot what is better?)
VRRP Support (better support in PPPEO or in hotspot?)
Proxy support (better support in PPPEO or in hotspot?)

regards,
Arman

In that case , what you need is hotspot in conjuction with userman. In order to bill your clients both prepaid and post

You should still be able to do mostly the same thing with PPPoE, I’ve never set it up before though so I can’t speak to how to do it with that. It just comes down to this, are your users permament or is it more of an adhoc situation like at a hotel? If your users are more permanent, then PPPoE will be more secure for you, however if it is adhoc then Hotspot is the way to go.

UserMAN is just a RADIUS server, any RADIUS server will accomplish what you want for allowing people to sign in, but you need some form of back end solution that will handle the payment process and any other bells and whistles you may want. There is information on the wiki on how to set up most of this and at least get you started, or there are several other providers out there that developed their own back end solution to do the same thing. For these it comes down to, how much are you willing to pay and what features do you want.

Thanks for your information.
