How good is the default Home AP VPN?

Home AP provides a very quick and easy way to start a VPN service on the router.
What service is it running? Is it encrypted?
Is it better to create my own L2TP+IPSec if I want my connection to be secure?

I could not find this information anywhere.

The QuickSet sets up both PPTP and IPSec/L2TP, so it should be good enough for any kind of client, including the latest Apple devices, which no longer support PPTP.
