Hello,
Some clients will use an internet connection from third party provider so I’d like to monitor from outside internet the Mikrotik router and if the client internet is down I will call the provider. The problem is I will not ping the link because if the lan cable of the link is broken, it will be online but the clients inside that lan will not access internet. Whats the best solution? May I create a VPN site to site and monitor the mikrotik connection status?
Thanks.
Your best bet is to setup a VPN.
Yup w/a VPN or GRE tunnel you can detect if the tunnel goes down (implement keep-alives). Alternatively if your device is behind a NAT router that the customer controls and you want to verify it isn’t a situation where the Internet is up but your device broke you can ping their WAN IP. Have them allow ICMP echo-requests from your WAN IP.
Thanks, Revelation and Idlemind,
That was an excellent idea. I’ll implement GRE tunnel with keep-alives. This will avoid a lot of problem to me. Thanks.
