How to Configure (settings) Multiple Wireless Wire bridges (two wAP60G)s on Same Network

Getting ready to install Wireless Wire and just want to avoid issues and like to configure them up in doors (out of weather) before installing.

Here is what I’m trying to do- two large properties and wish to setup up multiple Wireless Wire Bridges (don’t want to dig ditches for wired connections).

  1. Building One Site FIOS Internet > Wan Asus AC5300 Router with DHCP enabled for address range> 192.168.6.x (will have multiple Wireless Bridges (each pair a bridge) Planning on 4 total.
  2. Building Two >Wan ASUS AC1900 Router with DHCP enabled >192.168.7.x will get internet one wireless wire bridge from building one which I will hook into the Wan Port of ASUS AC1900 Router. Note: Building Two site will have two total wireless wire bridges (2 pairs which one will be bringing in internet from Building Site one).

So my question - I have purchase 2 (wireless wire sets). I opened one box and it seems to work great. I know on the first box the ips are 192.168.88.2 master and 192.168.88.3 slave. I am thinking all these sets are configured the same?

I’m asking the experts what configuration setting do to setup multiple wireless wire sets on same subnet and anything else that I need to do to get this setup working correctly? Also, I will what one or two computers that can access both sites (should this be done with a windows 10 bridge setup?

out of box devices are configured as transparent bridge (think of them as replacing existing cable). Addresses are static and you won’t be able to access devices by using IP address if you are not in same subnet (traffic will still be passed through this wireless bridge). Other than that everything will work in your setup.

Thanks Great and Easy but a couple other questions.

  1. So if I install 4-6 pairs of these and it looks (after opening my second box ), looks like both sets will have the same ip addresses 192.168.88.2 Master and 192.168.88.3 Slave and I guess any future purchases will have the same? Will this cause issues being on the same computer network or they talking through the mac addresses? What will be the easiest/best way to access them from different computer ip address range?
  2. I may have 3 sets plugged into the same unmanaged switch. Will they all work without any additional configuration? Does it matter or is there a best practise of which point gets the slave vs master unit? Thinking master unit should be closest to switch or router that brings in internet?
  3. Is it possible or desirable to change the ip addresses and put them on one of my network subnets to be able to access for troubleshooting?
  4. Is it desirable to change the pswds or SSD possible?
  5. Will the devices automatically update themselves to latest stable firmware? Should this be done? If so, are there certain steps?
  6. Finally, in one location on my property I’m going the have two of these fairly close aimed two different directions (like and “L” on its straight paths if that makes sense), any worries on something like this?

URGENT More Questions- READY TO INSTALL THESE WIRELESS KITS - before I install. Would like to answers to my previous post on this thread.

Also, My wireless kits have firmware 6.41.1 tried to do the check for updates and says dns error.

Question - should I update the firmware or leave it??? I read some posts about different versions having some issues (not being secured)?

If I need to update, then how do I do it manually or provide a fix on the dns issue so it can be updated automatically.

I think I need to change IP addresses don’t I so I can access them if I have more than one kit and they are all set with the same set of ips 192.168.88.2 master / 192.168.88.3 slave???

I’ve understood that there were large improvements in latest software with regards to 60GHz products…

Having a tough time upgrading to the latest firmware. When I try the update to latest firmware, it says dns error.

Tried following a link to install manually and I must be doing something incorrectly. Is there a video? I’m worried about some searches regarding 200,000 MikroTik Routers Compromised and not sure if mine might be a software version that needs updated (6.41.1ver)?

  1. Devices are in transparent bridge (Layer 2) mode - this won’t cause any issues, by exception if you are using same 192.168.88.0/24 network and trying to access the devices. To access the devices set correct IP addresse to the bridge interface.
  2. Yes, you can use unmanaged switch, BUT don’t connect devices from same pair in same switch or multiple pairs in same switches to avoid loop state. it does not matter which device is pluged in main gateway
  3. Yes, devices are fully configurable and support full RouterOS functionality.
  4. By default passwords and SSID’s are randomly generated, but we still recommend changing them.
  5. Devices will only update manually. This process can be automated by scripts.
  6. If frequency is set to automatic - device will pick up free channel and shouldn’t affect other nearby links.

We would recommend updating.
Default configuration does not have any DNS servers set on, so the device can’t get update servers address.
You can add DNS entries under IP> DNS, by default there is also no default route available (IP>Route menu)

Update can be also done by dragging and dropping update file in Winbox, or uploading it from WEBfig, ssftp, ftp, etc. For Wireless Wire devices you require ARM platform packages.

OK read your post and getting ready to put up 2 more (wireless wire kits) and I have a question on your answer #2 in connnecting multiple devices to same switch. So yes I am clear about connecting a pair (master and slave)to the same switch but I have one unmanaged switch were I need to connect devices (say 3 master’s or mix and match 3 sets of wireless wires kits) to the unmanaged switch.

Can I do this?

If there are any configurations I need to do or buy more switches, please provide details?

OK No one replied to last post and I have some more questions after installing 2nd wireless wire kit (4 total planned on property). I’ll also add a note to any one setting up more than one of these kits on a property.

Questions:

  1. On my first Wireless Kit install Master (Master Unit installed within a Large Pine Tree on TV Mast - with all branches trimmed so there is no obstruction to Slave Unit which is on a TV Mast on backside of Garage on TV Mast which is probably 6-7 feet above Tile Roof, distance between two point approx 117 meters. Problem - Slave says Signal:60/MCS 8 Band Test 840 Mbps send/840 Mbps Received / Master Unit says Signal: 80/MCS 8 Band Test 840 Mbps send/855 Mbps no packets loss. Speed is good but wondering if I can do better and why is the signal strength on slave only 60?

  2. It Looks like I don’t have to change IP Addresses (devices communicate through MAC addresses) because both sets (master 192.168.88.2/slave 192.168.88.3) are using the standard IP Addresses and looks like I don’t have to change IP Addresses even though I’m adding two more sets, unless some one suggests I need to change which I need to know steps unless it’s as simple as just IP Settings - I’m just worried with all the bridge setting of messing something up (units are already installed and are a pain to get to).

  3. What is the best method of lining these up - Ive just been eyeballing and looking at the leds on the unit, not sure if I can do any better or how sensitive these devices are? Or should I be using Winbox app? Are there some other settings I should look at to fine tune/maximize my signal and data speed?

  4. Final Question - The date on the Master/Slave on all units using for logging are stuck on 1/15/1970 which makes is hard to figure out when issues arise when looking at logs. Is there a way to make it tied to current date and time ???

Funny so there is no way to name them like MasterPairA, SlavePairA, MasterPairB etc…
They are pre-paired and act like an ethernet cable (plugNplay) from the user perspective (transparent).
You do raise some good points, on how to upgrade and how to aim etc…
Is there not any good documentation that comes with the units??

Do you have anything of the 200-300m variety. They seem well suited for 200 and less just not sure how much over 200 they are feasible??

Don’t know about the 200-300m but Yes you can put the naming in router identity field on the Winbox app which helps a great deal.

So I saw a security warning emailed to me
On February 2 a CVE issue was published, describing a vulnerability, which allows to proxy a TCP/UDP request through the routers Winbox port if it’s open to the internet.

A fix has already been released on February 11, 2019 in all RouterOS release channels. Please keep your device up to date, and protect Winbox port from untrusted networks.

So I looked at page and saw I needed to update my wireless wire kit to latest version (I was at 6.43.11 and updated to 6.43.12). All my routers have same signal reading except one that was at 60 and after upgrade now reads 50??? but on a bandtest reads like I’m stilling getting good speed at 843TX/826RX. So speed looks good but signal on one leg reading low?? Don’t understand?

As I said before so I did band test (note I have two wireless wire kits installed with standard ip pairs 192.168.88.2/3) but when I test two separate at same time the band width test drops dramatically on one wireless wire kit pair? Which I don’t quite understand and looking for explanation?

Going to be installing two more in coming days and want to avoid issue.

Updating to Firmware 6.44 MAJOR IMPROVEMENT on SPEED AND SIGNAL STRENGTH.

Just updated and where I was getting around 840 mps, I am now getting 950-970 mps and signal strength went to 95/8MC where I was getting Signal 80/6MC and fixed one slave wireless wire unit where I was getting 60. I did no other improvements except upgrading fireware to 6.44. This is a Must Do!!

Hoping some one can explain why Bandtest Speed (750mps) of Receiving is 200-300mps lower than sending (1050mps) on one of my newly installed wireless wire kits just installed. NOTE: this is #3 wireless wire kit of 5 to be added to my setup and have upgraded firmware 6.44). This link is approx 45 feet direct line of sight. My other 2 kits are prettty much the same sending and receiving but this one is off. Yes Speed is Great but would like it optimized

Hoping you can assist. On one of the wireless wire kits (I have 5 sets) that I have, I can’t get it to update to 6.44 (not issues on the other ones). It’s a master unit when I installed.

I think the problem on this particular unit I originally upgraded it to 6.43.11 incorrect firmware ( can’t remember but I did pick the ARM package (It did have a lot of components and I probably choose incorrect ones) and not sure if I did the MAIN, EXTRA, one of these or both). But I now know and have been successful getting units updated from the https://mikrotik.com/product/wireless_wire#fndtn-downloads RouterOS current release which I just drop in the file folder of the unit using winbox program and reboot.

But because I may have installed the incorrect version, I’m just trying to get it to go back to factory defaults and can’t see to get them. It only takes me back to 6.43.11 version and won’t take the new version 6.44. I need step by step instructions to either get back to original firmware setup or just getting the 6.44 version to install?

Just incase anyone curious on performance with light rain right now. On my 130m bridge the my signal strength has dropped to 65/mcs 8 (was 95/8mcs but using the BTest I have not notice any performance drop - getting ~950mps both directions.
