The SXT unit comes with a powershot lead which makes the suggestion to use shielded cat5e cable for earthing the unit a rather difficult one if the powershot lead is preventing the shielded cable to pass the earth.
The manual than also talks about some place on the motherboard where an earth can be connected but to be honest, it leaves me clueless.
So, how to earth an SXT? (or Groove)
I haven’t looked into the groove’s info yet but I wouldn’t see how to earth these units? For the Ethernet cable the same counts as for the SXT where the groove has no access to any direct motherboard or radio grounding.
to the left of the ethernet, is a grounding connector (metallic loop).
connect grounding wire there. for the groove, you can only use the shielded cable and ground at the bottom of the tower (at the next device).
Ok, I suspected that strange ring to be the ground. How to connect a cable to that? Only I can think of is solding which is not my thing, specially in such close space.
So, if the groove is to be grounded by shielded cable it means the supplied powershot lead is therefore useless? A bit strange philosophy; tell buyer about a preferred connection but than deliver the buyer with assesories that don’t allow it. So buyer has to buy extra equipment to make it happen…
Why not a simple butterfly screw like all the 'legacy´ MT units used to have? Like the RIC’s or the outdoor boxes…
Like I said before, new devices of MT ar not in all aspects improved compared to the past.
I am still using loads of RIC’s, all I need is to upgrade rb122’s and r133C3’s into 411’s or 711’s.
These RIC’s are still about the best CPE’s I have except maybe that they are only single chain. It’s such a pity they are not in production anymore…
Most house here lack proper ground themselves due the dry state of the soils it stands on during 3/4 of the year. What would be best policy here?
One electrician told me not to use shielded cable if you cannot guarantee good equalizing and grounding of units on BOTH end of the cable. It would actually degrade the throughput and many drop-outs?
Is it safe to use the house earth grid available in most power sockets? Either by a converted plug or a special (UBNT!) adapter that provide such?
Would that not trigger the differential protection (“earth leak protection”) of the house since they work at milli-volts and amps which could be indeed be produced by static ESD’s? Every time ESD flow reaches a certain level the power of the house cuts! Clients wont be happy with that!
These questions are not there because I am heavily hammered by ESD’s. My network worked for years without grounding of any units, even not my main AP masts where grounded! And I hardly even had failing units. But with all the Ethernet port issues I am facing I am looking in all kind of plausible causes and solutions. And indeed in some units grounding solved problems in 4.x and 5.x version I never had in 3.x series. (My main rb1000 and rb439AH are running for 5 years now and ever started with 2.x version!). But since proper earthing is in most CPE situations complicate and it also not always solves the issue I am trying everything to find a the cause and solution to the ‘port flap’ issue.
Hmm. Is there a certain way how the grounding is supposed to be attached to this loop?
I’d really prefer not to solder as it is kind of hard standing on a tower or roof.
Second question. Which RJ45 Plugs are out there that propperly connect the shield and fit
into the SXT?
Hirose does not it is to long. Anybody tested Steward Plugs? Anything else that I do not know
anything of?
As for the old style loop I just put an alligator clip on the end of the ground wire and called it good. Always dab some silicone on it if you’re worried about it slipping off.
