How to increase Range to routerboard 500s MAX potential?

Im using a 2.4 ghz card with a 6db antenna and winbox set to 6dbgain at an RV park. The range is terrible. We are only getting a couple hundred feet line of sight. Enter an RV or building and get nothing. What do I need to do to maximize its potential? Maybe I have someing setup wrong? Its setup to 802.11b only and Ive tried various frequencies which show up clean when scanning underwinbox.

So, Do I need a different Card? Different Antenna?

Is there something in winbox that could be setup wrong?

Any help would be great as our dlink router is currently out performing this thing. Thanks.

oops double post…

odds are the Dlink router supports extended range.

RV parks, trailors, mobile homes, etc, very difficult to work with. The aluminum siding is generally at least a 20dB loss.

I have an antenna outside my home, if I open the door (aluminum), signal goes from -70 to -60, just like that, still not even close to line of sight.

remove the 6db gain setting, that will decrease transmit power by 6db i believe to stay ‘legal’. also check if your using antenna a or b.

No, the opposite!
Specifying antenna gain in ROS makes it account for antenna gain to stay legal, specifying 0 dB antenna will allow more tx power.

However, if clients are laptops, increasing tx power will not get you there as uplink from laptops normally is the problem.
You should instead go for higher-gain sectors (maybe add another radio card), then you will also amplify the signal FROM the laptops.

exactly what I said, if you enter 6 into the gain field ROS will decrease the tx power by 6db to stay legal.

What 2.4GHz card are you using? What antenna? How much and what type (size), if any, cabling between the radio and antenna?
