How to know the right hardware??

I need a RB to share internet access for 42 apartments.
I need:
–DHCP
–PPPOE client
–Bandwidth limit per IP or MAC
–WEBPROXY with external linux

Which RB can I buy???
Is there another service that I’ll need?? hotspot? or can I block the users that dont pay via firewall?
Thanks in advance…

first, you have to determine :

  • how fast internet speed do you have/want
  • 42 apartments, how many users from all of those 42 apartments

i recommend RB1100AHx2 or Cloud Core CCR1016-12G

The ADSL link is 35mbps down / 3mbps UP.
From 42 apartments maybe 20 at the same time?
Thanks!

20 users per apartment or totally 20 users from all of the 42 apartments.?

If its totally only 20 users and 35 Mbps downstream, RB450G will be enough. Dont forget to add a microsd to increasing storage capacity

Yes, totally 20 users!! (at the same time).
So the RB450 is enough? the uSD card is for web cache or dns cache?
All the 450s have slot for uSD?
Thanks a lot!!

yes, RB450G will be enough. according to http://routerboard.com/rb450g the lowest speed that might occur to RB450G with complex routing configuration (not bridging) is 39.68 Mbps, while your maximum bandwidth is 35 Mbps.

The microsd is used for web cache, i suggest to using sandisk mobile ultra class 10 (minimum capacity 8 GB). Yes, all RB450G has microsd slot

you’re welcome

I thought that sf card performance was really slow and kills the CPU, if you really need web cache then go for something with USB. Like a rb2011.

I think USB will be also slow because of software realization of USB stack and will eat CPU. If you need Web Cache use x86 with 2GB RAM and SATA HDD or (m)SATA SSD if necessary.

As far as i know, sandisk mobile ultra class 10 is the fastest microsd. and i’ve been using that to caching web proxy with RB450G over a year (27 active internet users).

Good day, The RouterBoard RB450G supports MicroSDXC UHS-I 64GB memory to use as cache

WebProxy?
thanks.
