I think you get a free updates for a year after you purchase your license. Generally upgrades are fairly easy and painless, but you may have a few issues going from 2.8 to 2.9.
Go to the downloads page and choose the appropriate software for your needs. Make sure you get the correct package for your hardware.

simply upgrade the 2.8 software to 2.9 software. to upgrade the software version, upload the new NPK packages to the router with FTP and then reboot the router. it will be upgraded.

by the way, 2.8.9 was released in April 2004, which is 1.5 years ago. It is not fast

By the look of it, when you uploaded the files the names got changed. For example on your system you have SYSTEM_2.NPK when in fact it should be system-2.9.5.npk, and ROUTING_.NPK should be routing-2.9.5.npk etc
If I were you I would delete all the files that relate to upgrading in your router and upload them again making sure that the names are correct, then when you reboot they should be recognised
use normal FTP client
