I am wondering if there is a simple yet affective method of using bursting to control excessive bandwidth monopolization I experience with gamers.
What I would like to do is be able to control how long a gamer can monopolize available bandwidth at the gamers CPE.
I have one client which hinges on abusive as he games for 8 + hour stints causing network quality degradatikon for all.
How would I make it so abusive users have access to 768k for let’s say 10 minutes at a time and then for the next 20 minutes after a certain amount of bandwidth usage be throttled to a lower rate?
I would sincerely appreciate input and a working modle example if possible.
Thanking you in advance for your help with this matter.
Games monopolize traffic??? Usually multiplayer games takes only few KBps, and usually gamers play only one game at the time - so I don’t think it is the actual problem.
Some games (like wow) do their updates on a specific port, and then there’s map downloads / sound downloads, so this may be what hes talking about. On a slow connection also being used for http / voip it can sometimes cause issues.
Some customers also run gaming servers on their connections.
how many maps do you have? this certainly is not the problem. just give HTTP traffic priority by assigning a certain speed, and the rest leave to other traffic.
haha, i was just arguing his case (as to what may happen). We dont have this problem, we already have fairly good QOS But if you like Normis you could help me with MY issue, in that i cant get XEN to work in 3.17
Another good example would be xbox live which does most of its traffic on 3074, yet we’ve seen entire demo’s / videos come down on this port. and many games use 512k on xbox live.
I take it the traffic / customers wasn’t directed at me, i was merely putting forward a case for why someone might feel the need to shape gaming traffic.
just give HTTP traffic priority by assigning a certain speed, and the rest leave to other traffic.

I will go ahead and setup mangle then use queues to provide full package value to port 80 and all other will have limitations, is that along the lines of what you are suggesting?
Thank you all for your input, I appreciate your time.
