I have searched on this subject several times, but there has never been a clear answer from anyone at Mikrotik.
Does Mikrotik RouterOS support IAPP / 802.1f handoff between access points?
We have a project that we have quoted Cisco access points on, however I would prefer to use Mikrotik AP’s as they have a lot more features that we can use. A key requirement is the ability is for the users to be able to roam from once access point to another so we very much need this feature.
I have used Proxim AP-4000MR-LR, AP-700 and AP-4000 in the past and they perform this beautifully even on virtual AP’s. It would be fantastic if MT can do this.
We want to use a number of RB333’s as indoor access points, one on each floor of a large house (5 stories) and the client wants to be able to “roam” the house, hopping from one AP to the next without being disconnected.
IMHO MT should put this on their “to do” list. In a “tender” scenario, products can be rejected if the features are missing, even if the customer doesn’t end up using them. Crazy, but true.
Yes Stephen, I did not think of the fact that VoIP handsets are a perfect example of why your need IAPP.
This is not a tender scenario, we already have the deal but I would prefer not to use Cisco as the Mikrotik platform is more flexible in every other aspect, and gives us a path to 802.11n
we have implemented mikrotik APs before in this manor and have not had any problems with clients roaming or getting disconnected at the handoff. I did not test VoIP, but did roam around the building with my laptop and never saw so much as a dropped ICMP packet durring the handoff (I did however see some latency increase as I associated to the new access point). I suspect most newer client radio drivers/software packages take care of this without backend support from the APs.
I can back this - we’ve done it before and never had issue so long as you’re not using PPPoE or something to that effect - Perhaps set up a test in the lab NzMonkey and see if it works for you there?
