ideal videoconference setup @home

Hi There,

I’m new to MikroTik and was wondering what is the best configuration for a home situation where there is just 1 publiek IP address and a video communication system connected true H.323. Hoping you can help me out with developing the best configuration.

If we category all the things that needs to be setup for a ideal system configuration. I think about this:

  • Port forwarding/NAT
  • Firewall protection
  • Bandwidth Queues
  • OoS

[feel free to add to the list]

  • Port forwarding / NAT
As I am not a router specialist, I know that NAT is not good for videoconference. Normally the best thing to do is configuring a static NAT towards a internal IP. but as I have only 1 IP address at home this is not going to work. but what then?

  • Firewall protection
What is the best protection for video communication. the best would be some L7 ALG or something i guess. all the deep packet inspections tools just give more latency.

  • Bandwidth
make sure that there is enough bandwidth available for the videoconference. with modern systems 1500 Kbps is enough to get a HD standard picture on H.264

  • Qos
how to make sure that video is getting first out en in.

So I was hoping to brainstorm with you guys to see how I can build a good configuration for this. I there are people already implementing a video communication system at home. i’m wondering what your setup is.

Br,
