Idiot's guide to basic hotspot setup

Howdy, so I’ve found a few guides on how to setup a hotspot with user & guest accounts, but they all seem to be outdated - nothing looks like the WebFig or interface for my wAP AC. Some seemed to use UserMan, yet others show it as part of IP>Hotspot setup…

I attempted to use the Hotspot Setup wizard, but when it asks for which interface to use, not sure if I need one for each wireless (there’s two?) or can it catch both somehow?

Does anyone have an idiot’s guide to setting up a hotspot?

  • wAP will be the only AP, connected to a generic Technicolor router from the ISP. May end up adding another AP in months time but at this stage think we can get coverage for the station from the wAP only.
  • We want a set group of users with ‘unlimited’ access, and a bunch of guest accounts limited to 12h access. Do I still need to install UserMan or is there an easier way?
  • In theory, the Technicolor router will only be doing PPPoE auth to the ISP, DHCP and DNS etc - could probably get the wAP to do this if easier, and ditch the router.

Help!

I believe wast majority of Mikrotik admins primarily use WinBox, not WebFig. And so that’s WinBox that you will see on screenshots in most guides you can find these days.

Cheers, will have another look!

Webfig has similar functionality as Winbox. You can just follow the general guidance, click similarly named buttons like in the manual. You are not forced to use Winbox, Webfig will do the same things just fine.
