I currently have VerizonFIOS as my home ISP and Cable. Their routers have never been that great and for some time I have been using typical home routers/WAPS with DD-WRT. By doing this I lose the ability to remote program our DVR. There is a long post on DSL reports on how to fix this and it requires a bridge router. I decided to purchase a RB750GL for the bridge router due to its compact size and comments on other networking forums. I never heard of MikroTik before.
Last night I unboxed the router and started to get the feel of the UI and its capabilities. I also started to do some google searches on configurations. This prompted me to start thinking why keep this, I might be better off getting a CRS125-24G-1S-1N. Why the CRS125 you might ask. First I hate tiered switches, and I have switches in 5 rooms and one in my wiring closet. This means 2 switches have to go through the wiring closet switch before it gets to the router. The CRS125 fixes this since it has 24 ports. I can ditch the 16 port Trendnet closet switch, and the dlink DIR-825 running DD-WRT. Consolidation/Simplicity is a good thing.
My question is can I setup a VLAN off the CRS125 to feed the wan port on the Verizon supplied Actiontec? Would I need to setup a separate DHCP server or can I create zone for this VLAN using the DHCP server on Mikrotik’s router? Is it possible to run this setup with just one router switch? Link to the DSL Reports 3 router solution for remote DVR http://www.dslreports.com/faq/16858. If I can come up with a good solution using a single router/switch I’m sure many other Verizon home users would be buying this product.
