We use the wAP R ac as a 5G modem, as it is one of the 2 RBs with USB3.0 bus support on its mini-PCIe slot and also the only with support of both 24V/48V PoE. The bottleneck for our workflow, is the 16MB flash though… Following the release of ROS 7.17, the main RouterOS package seems to have got even bigger, and although we have ditched the wireless package completely to save space (yeah, no wireless interfaces for us), adding a handful of custom scripts (we use them for monitoring large number of deployments and “fleet management” with GPS) completely fills the flash storage, to the point of “could not save configuration changes, not enough storage space available”.
Seeing the release of the wAP ax with 128MB flash and a big CPU boost, was great news for us, but MikroTik, where is the “wAP R ax” now? We need it desperately!!!
I am curious what kind of scripts have you placed on device, because I own two of these devices, one of which runs 7.18beta4 (which is bigger than 7.17 because of file sharing) and with just wireless (not wifi-qcom-ac) and routeros packages there’s still about 1040KiB free. Removing wireless package should net over 2MiB free, so I am unsure how you managed to fill it with just scripts.
That being said, I agree we need wAP R ax as a device. The shell of wAP ax itself is almost identical to wAP ac, including drillable holes for SMA connector and space prepared for SIM card, so I think it might be just a matter of time before such device is introduced. Ideally they’d go with M.2 slot with USB 3.0 lanes exposed since industry has largely moved away from miniPCIe cards. I would buy such device without second thought, and I am sure I’m not alone in that regards.
