Hi all , my first post.
I would to purchase ROS ( licence L4 ) and install it on X86 ( Alix ) , but I have some questions :
I will install ROS on a test PC and then , after tests , I will move the compact flash on the Alix final hardware ; is it possible ?
Are there preferred compact flash brands / types ?
Which version have i to download ? May I download directly the release candidate other then the stable ?
Because at work we have only the 443 ( HTTPS ) port via a proxy opened to internet , now I’m using Openvpn to connect to my home ; is it possible with ROS to do the same ( VPN routed or Bridged with a single HTTPS port ) ?
Is it possible to purchase licence L4 directly from Mikrotik.com ( I’m from Italy ) ?
ROS hasn’t a Radius server embedded ; is it possible to install a server such FREERADIUS ?
Are ALL Atheros b/g/n wifi cards supported with the L4 licence ?

Yes. Licenses are tied to the drive they’re installed on. The license moves with the drive.

Kingston seems to work well.

You can download either.

OpenVPN is the red-headed step child of RouterOS. It might work, but many things aren’t supported - such as UDP transport.

Yes.

Not as such. You can install a virtual machine depending on your host CPU architecture, but that is cumbersome. That said, Mikrotik makes a RouterOS package called User Manager that is essentially a RADIUS server.

The license has nothing to do with what cards are supported - it’s all about what drivers are present in the kernel. You cannot add additional drivers yourself. http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Supported_Hardware#802.11a.2Fb.2Fg_wireless_cards. This link also has compatible hardware for CF cards, and Alix controllers. It doesn’t list wireless chipsets as such, but if you research the wireless cards/sticks listed and find out what chipset they use you’ll know whether that chipset is supported.
Thanks a lot for the answers , Fewi , now I have some other questions :
License : you write that I can download Rc or stable , but about the licence : if I install RC 5.09 , the licence L4 will cover from 5.xx to 6.xx or from 4.xx ( stable ) to 5.xx ?
I don’t understand what do you mean “OpenVPN is the red-headed step child of RouterOS” because my poor english …
User Manager : I would my wifi connections authenticated via Radius ( WPA Enterprise ) ; is it possible without external radius server ?
Atheros : question because I did a bridge connection among ethernet and wifi AP BRIDGE but it didn’t work , i thought my wifi card it’s not supported.
You know, that’s a good question. To be safe install 4.x first and then upgrade.
RouterOS has an OpenVPN client, but it isn’t very good.
I’m not 100% sure, but I don’t think User Manager can be used for WPA Enterprise, so you would have to use an external RADIUS server.
If the interface shows up at all, it is supported. If it doesn’t have drivers, it wouldn’t show at all since the OS wouldn’t know what it is.
So it is now possible to buy a L4 x86 license today and upgrade it to 6.x(even though i would actually get a 4.x license since 5.0 isn’t released yet)?
I asked your support this a couple of weeks ago:
Question: “If I buy a L4 license today, will i get a 4.x license and be able to upgrade once(to 5.x and not 6.x)? In that case I guess the best way is to wait until the stable 5.0 is released and buy it then to be able to upgrade to 6.x?”
