I am new to the world of Mikrotik and soon I’m gonna ride a wireless node and wanted to know if you can install applications on a linux RouterBOARD as it were. The idea is to use a plate as a proxy with Squid RouterBOARD avoid installing a PC and saving energy consumption in the node. The idea of doing in the node instead of the NOC is to save bandwidth on the backhauls. How do you see this idea?. Thanks.
This is what people tell me every time I bring this up, but I know routerboards could have great filesharing if Mikrotik would just let them. Lots of consumer routers have USB ports for filesharing and I don’t want to spend a ton of extra money for a computer or a NAS when it would work perfectly fine if Mikrotik supported it. If everyone took the approach like “routers should just be routers” then there would be no iPhone. And guess what, the iphone is extremely popular and recently Apple just took the title as the biggest cellphone company in the US. I don’t think Apple would have gained such popularity in the phone market if they made a phone that could only make phone calls.
Not to mention routerboards can already do a lot of stuff that goes beyond the scope of what a router should be able to do.
