Hello,
I have a CRS109-8G-1S-2HnD (running 7.8 stable) that I’ve used for many years and it has served me well. However within the last couple weeks I’ve noticed some significant intermittent latency and packet loss. My setup is the typical router connected to a cable modem. Here is the testing I have done so far:
-
Using webfig, ping my ISP’s default gateway from a static public source IP address assigned to the WAN interface. I get intermittent packet loss (about 20%) and occasional high latency (max ~900ms)
-
Ping the gateway from clients (wired and wireless using NAT). They experience similar intermittent packet loss and latency.
-
Configure a client machine connected to the cable modem at L2. It gets a DHCP assigned IP address from the ISP. No NAT is occurring and I get no packet loss and latency remains consistently low.
This seems to narrow the problem down to the router itself. I have checked the wired connections and confirmed there are no port errors. I’ve tried warm rebooting and power cycling. I’ve also confirmed I’m not anywhere near my ISP bandwidth nor the bandwidth of the wired or wireless connections.
The pattern of packet loss and latency is not super predictable. It may happen repeatedly for several minutes, subside for a couple minutes, then resume again, and then will subside for several minutes, almost long enough to make me think the problem is gone. Then it starts up again.
Some additional info that may help:
Firmware Type ar9344
Factory Firmware 3.19
Current Firmware 3.33
Upgrade Firmware 7.8
Free Memory 77.5 MiB
Total Memory 128.0 MiB
CPU Load 6 %
Free HDD Space 108.7 MiB
Total HDD Size 128.0 MiB
At this point I’m suspecting either a bug in 7.8 or a hardware problem, but I wanted to check if anyone else had any ideas before I did anything extreme. Thanks!!
