internet for a restaurant or cafe shop

it’s been only few weeks that I bought a mikrotik router and still I need help to find out what exactly I should do.

I want to distribute internet to a restaurant customers with limited access (limited time or bandwidth ).
is mikrotik enough and good for my purpose ? do I need another software or hardware to make it possible ?
I’ll be glad if someone can show me the path and tell me what I should do

they key is radius + hotspot + usermanager

Which Routerboard device have you purchased

The simplest way would be to use Quickset, select Home AP. From there you can define a Guest Wireless Network and a Limit Download Speed. This will only limit their download speed, not limit time connected nor bandwidth. I usually find that this is sufficient for a restaurant.

Maybe start and go from there. More complicated setups include hotspots, vouchers, etc…

Yes Mikrotik router is the best…if u can afford any mikrotik router with license 4 upward, yes, you can do even hotspot ticketing with that. I have configured hotspot with RB951 and it’s working perfectly.

thx everyone

I must search more cuz i’m just the beginner. I bough a RB-951Ui mikrotik router. I dont know if it’s enough or not !

Depends on the size of your restaurant and layout. I use an RB751U-2HnD for a small restaurant here. Downstream from ISP is 20mbps, 2 wlans, 1 for staff and 1 speed limited for guests. Peak about 40 wifi devices. Works well.

Very simple setup. The restaurant layout is reactangular so just 1 AP was enough. No tickets or vouchers, just simple wifi password which is changed once in a blue moon.

How much mbps totally you have apply to guests?

One guest can use all available guest bandwidth or has a limited download upload like 2mbps down and 512kbps for upload (pcq) ?

For this restaurant, all there is a fixed max 2mbps download speed limit for the guest ssid. So 10 guests can use up all 20mbps if there is enough simultaneous activity. Nothing fancy like PCQs here. They didn’t want to pay for it. :unamused:

And how much bandwidth fixed for upload? I am jusk asking to check with what bandwidth people are happy! Me usually i fix at 3mbps download and 384kbps upload

No limit for upload. I know that’s not very professional but upload doesn’t get used up much.

The ISP connection here is 20/20mbps. What’s your ISP speed for the places you fixed at 3m/384kbps.

I usually test at home to see what kind of speeds I’d be happy with. I know my kids are ok with 512k down because youtube works at that speed  though at a lower quality.

most of my customers have 10mbps download/1mbps upload. so their simple queue max-limit is 9mbps/800kpbs
upload in my country is very little. most of the guests are uploading now to facebook, instagram etc
in all my customer rb’s i am playing with pcq. now i will start setting also pcq-rate around 2-3mbps down and 256kbps upload because if someone starts to upload with pcq-rate=0, download is impossible!

Wow, 1 mbps upload is really very low.

It’s always difficult to find a sweet spot for all customers. There will always be somebody who needs more speed. Now I’m thinking maybe 2mbps is a bit low. I’m going to follow you and try 3mbps.

yes 2mbps is a bit slow for browsing. i am testing this by myself. i am sitting in my pc with my rb2011 (download pcq-rate=2048k) and i open facebook imdb and various sites. you will see that 2mbps seems slow for loading various pages.
the good thing about pcq is that even you exceed max-limit download capacity, it will splitted equally less and less to guests.

i prefer to have download “limit-at=0” so if there are few guests browsing, they will have full download speed.
so if i have 10mbps download max-limit and i have 10 guests using internet at the same time, they will get 1mbps each! if there is only one guest he will get 10mbps.
but with upload “limit-at” is different because i have very little upload capacity. i set it around 256kbps or 384kbps
