Internet works fine but downloads fail

Hi,

I followed an online tutorial to get a Mikrotik RB4011 configured.

My WAN connection on Eth1 is DHCP
Initially I set “Use peer DNS to true” but then the router took an IP that I could not ping.

I then unticked this and used 1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8 as my DNS

All is well and LAN seems fine with browsing ok.

My issue is when I try to download large files as an example the Windows 11 ISO from Microsoft’s website it fails after a few minutes. I can restart the download and then it again downloads a little and then fails again. And so on until many retries and I eventually get the download.

Not sure where to begin fault finding this issue and was hoping that someone could shed some light.

If it would help to send the complete config could someone just let me know how I can use Winbox to extract the whole setup for review by the forum members.

Hello!!!

To upload the complete config, you could do the following:

  • Connect to the Mikrotik from Winbox
  • Open a new terminal and write “export file=mikrotiksettings.rsc”
  • Go to “Files” section (In winbox)
  • Search the file “mikrotiksettings.rsc”, and drag and drop this to any folder on your computer
  • Then you could open this file with any text editor app
  • Just hide sensitive information and copy the text here

IMHO, the problem that you described does not seems to be anything relative with the mikrotik config
Maybe you could test this connecting the Internet directly to any computer.

Damián

Routers have no control on cloud providers - you would need some creative mangle rules/queues to make downloads fail. Try another browser/file location.
