IP phones DHCP problem.

Hello Guys,

I have some 7961 cisco phones connected on a cisco switch. And my backbone router is an MT router. I want to be able to give the phone an IP using DHCP but it always gives me a DHCP timeout error.

I monitored the traffic and the MT router can pick up the broadcast request from the phone for IP and the router offers the IP but the phone never picks the IP up.

Anyone ever had this problem before??? Or if someone has configured cisco IP phones with a MT router it would be good to describe the procedure.

Well, not with cisco phones, but on one of my networks Windows Vista computers would timeout DHCP requests. I also monitored the network, as you did, and saw the DHCP request from the client followed by the router response, but the Vista client ignored the response and eventually timed out. Windows XP had no problems.

I upgraded the entire network to ROS 3.8, which of course didn’t work, and then upgraded to 3.9. The problematic Vista machines then accepted their IP addresses, at least on the day we tried it. We’re expecting more traffic this weekend, so I’ll find out if it’s really fixed.

What version of router OS are you running?

I’m running 3.4. I’ll upgrade to 3.9 and give an update. Thanks.

Thanks to dsobin. I have upgrated the version of the routerOs to 3.9 and the phones where in possition to pick up the ips and all the box and dice.

So the result when it comes to CISCO phones and picking IPs using DHCP use routerOS 3.9 to do the trick for you.
