Iprovements In WinBox I Would Like To See...

First, I would like to thank MikroTik for the great Users Meeting they put on last week. I met some really interesting people, and heard some very informative presentations. I was especially grateful for the hospitality shown by MikroTik. If you have never gone to a MUM, I would recommend doing so at your earliest opportunity. That being said, I would like to list some changes/improvements “I” would like to see in WinBox. This being the forum for features and improvements, not all of us run or manage a large network so using the Dude seems unnecessary.

  1. Ensure when doing a reboot from the “System” drop down, that all previously configured windows/dialog boxes, retain their size, shape, and content configuration the same way they do when doing a reboot from the “New Terminal” window.

  2. Don’t bury the “Script” function under the “System” drop down, put it on top where it is easy to get to.

  3. Don’t bury the “Terminal” function under the “System” drop down, put it on top where it is easy to get to.

  4. As an alternative for #2 and #3, make the menus user configurable so we can display items we would use the most

  5. Remove the default minimum sizes from dialog/windows from within WinBox, i.e. the “Interface” window does not have to be that big when there is only a couple of interfaces showing. This would be great for all of us using 1280x800 screens or NetBooks, to make things more manageable.

  6. Auto-size all columns within each window

  7. Have a user configured default layout that can be transported from one RouterBoard to another without having to reconfigure each time. This should be a local file.

Thanks again to MikroTik, and all the presenters and vendors.

yeah, that would be great. but… only after fixing serious bugs ))

I agree with this point.

Others things that i like to see in winbox:

  1. Ask for confirm the action when you press (accidentally) remove buttons :unamused:

  2. Ability to categorize mangle rules, lists works very well when you have fews rules but when rules start to grow is crazy!!
This change are only “aesthetic”, here the photoshoped idea:

  3. Ability to add more service ports. Why only few service ports in firewall?

  4. can possible that every user can save his own profile (settings, columns, etc…) in the router? so if i connect from my house or i connect from a cyber cafe can auto-load my saved settings.

many people never use scripts, why would you want to put this in the top menu?

it’s buried because it saves space for netbook users.

If saving space is a MikroTIK goal, and I also concur with that goal, the why not implement item #4?

  1. As an alternative for #2 and #3, make the menus user configurable so we can display items we would use the most

Making this user configurable would eliminate seldom used commands thus saving display space. Also item #5, to reduce the default minimum size of dialog boxes?

Something i miss a lot in our enterpise environment is the posibility to read a common config file from f.ex a webserver or fileserver. So when I put out new devices i only save it to that file and its ready for everyone else the next time they start winbox.

OR.

A solution that help me execute winbox with a paramenter from a webpage, i have seen someting like that with putty where a link in firefox or ie like “ssh://node1.host.info” execute ssh in putty, maybe it would be possible to make someting like “winbox://node1.host.info” that execute winbox from internet explorer or firefox.

Some inspiration for å winbox solution - http://www.nilpo.com/2007/08/windows-xp/creating-a-custom-url-protocol-for-ssh/

I have written a small utility to make it possible to start a WinBox-connection by using an URL like http:///username/password.

It can be downloaded from here:

The #5 point of the topic initiator is very much needed.
For instance, on contrary of what is said by MT, some windows are still to big to have them fully usable in a netbook.
If I openn the interface window it is always bigger then my screen and thus I can barely reach “Default Authenticate” tickbox let alone the two ones under that… I have to move the complete winbox window up as much as possible with the mouse and then scroll down to get to these functions. Risking I moved the winbox to high and my mouse pointer can’t reach the top bar any more to bring the window back…!

Also, in the old 2.x family each window that was closed inside the winbox window opened up with the same info the next time (even after a reboot of my PC) I open that window in a new winbox session. Now I build a nice overview in for instance the ´wireless / registration ´ list with all date I’d like to see but every time I close this window I have to $¡@*! build that window again to my need! Very frustrating! Why can’ winbox not remember what I wanted to see!

Another Item high on my list: Why can I not tick several options in one go when I select these under the “Show columns” menu? Every choice I make closes this menu! Also very frustrating!

Winbox is a great tool, but improvements are certainly possible.

Forgot this one:

When selecting a registered MT device in the ´registration´ table of Wireless tables, I can right click and start a telnet or mac-telnet session to that unit. It would be nice to be able to just open a new winbox session to that unit too through the same action…
Since the IP address of such unit is not show by default in the reg. list I have to ´fish´ that one first and then open the winbox starter with that IP to get to the unit. Live could be so much easier…

yes!

Agreed. Winbox can wait. Stay on track.

If you need a better winbox, there’s an API you can use to create your own implementation (although this can be very difficult). If anyone has a startup project, I’d be interested in helping out, but don’t have to time to create one from scratch.

Marvellous!

Just to note that you need to run the registration as ‘administrator’ if you’re using Windows 7.

Unfortunately the password is now in plain text but otherwise this is a neat little app.

Thanks.

There’s an update available from here:
http://www.cmit.de/downloads/Mini-Winbox-URL-Scheme-Handler_v0.8.16.zip

It now allows for URLs like “winbox://:@”, too.
Thanks to Stefano Coletta for the suggestion

Christian, you are a star!

Well done!

Another quick one to add to the list, when I use the backup command, please backup the Winbox screen arrangement too so I don’t have to start rearranging them again when I restore.

Thanks,

I really like this. Except…

I use RADIUS to authenticate my employees to winbox. So they login with domain credentials.

The handler doesnt work with winbox://user@domain:pass@1.2.3.4

Any chance of getting that fixed?

Vote 3 stars for these

Read in the forum somewhere, to click on exit, instead of the “X” button does the job, but arrangement never stays if the winbox disconnects by itself (or by accident).
