IPSec in tunnel mode doesnt provide an interface. Tunneling protocols (GRE, IPIP, L2TP) provide an interface, so you can use routing and any other functionality that ties to an interface. Then using IPSec in transport mode will provide the same security.

Its more complex, more configuration needed, but gives more features.
