Is a hEX (RB750Gr3) powerfull enough...

…for driving a small network with a few VLAN’s, 2-3 AP’s and perhaps 20-25 devices? Internet connection is 100mbits. Internal Gigabit LAN will be handled in separate switch.
I would like to run The Dude Server package as well and will attach some USB storage to help that end.
Otherwise only the default service needed at the core of the small network; DHCP, DNS, NTP and maybe some monitoring.

I am ready to spring for more powerfull hardware, but trying to not overbuy this time as I normally do

Any advice to a “beginner” that has kind of re-discovered Mikrotik recently is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Kind regards,
Henrik

Its not important how many devices you have on the inside lan. A 100Mpgs internet line should be no problem for the router to handle.

Thanks for your fast response. I understand the number of users does not really matter - it was more to illustrate the overall setup. But I get your point, thanks again.

Hex is a great fit for those needs. If your managed switch has an SFP port the HEX S, may be a nice option.

Thanks! Yeah - my switch does have that option, but I already got the “normal” hEX from earlier so all things considered I’m gonna try to make it work as is and take it from there…

In your situation, fibre “might” shave off a couple of micro seconds, considering the costs of SFP modules, etc, definitely not worth it

Exactly. In this case it would be over-engineering things, allthough I hate to admit it
Thanks
