Is the dude still maintained? It seems that most of the updates is just for RouterOS and not The Dude. Even the documentation is ages old without any new features or additions. Also seems that The Dude is does not scale that well on large networks
tl’dr: Not really maintained.
New features weren’t released for years. Mikrotik did some update in regards to common crashes recently, but AFAIK, it still keeps crashing under certain circumstances. If there are bugs like that, I think it is safe to say it is not maintained
Mikrotik said in a reply to another thread that a version of Dude server for RouterOS Version 7 will be released.
they are letting it slowly dying. Stable versions > 6.45.9 still heavily bugged. Not 64-bit support. Graphics and menus very confusional.
We are migrating all to other monitor applications, it’s completely unusable.
Sad.
Using 6.48, performance has been flawless, no issues whatsoever monitoring hundreds of devices around the country.
Also, normis has confirmed they are not letting it die: http://forum.mikrotik.com/t/dude-for-7-1/151849/1
Hello,
We use the Dude for about 10 years now.
We probe a thousand of device.
We don’t have bugs, but we miss some feature.
If you have a lot of bug, maybe you need someone to help you setup your Dude correctly.
For example, our first experience of runing Dude on a windows workstation was not a good experience.
The Dude require a lot of TCP socket + ICMP and UDP connection.
Maybe a real Windows server distribution would have done it, but we choose to get a more dedicated OS.
Actually, we use a RouterOS distribution on a dedicated metal.
We also got a RouterOS distribution on a VM that probe 500 devices, but it run a little bit slower.
None have failed or bugs.
We do a backup every night and clean the db from time to time.
Hope it will help you made it works.
Regards,
Michael Plourde
