is rb750g the right choice ?

Hello

I’m pretty seduced by this really cheap and small router, and I have some questions that you may answer :

  • in datasheet it says operating temperature from -20°C to 50°C, is it OK to put this routerboard in an outdoor weatherproof case ? it would act as a simple switch for some wifi AP (2 APs and one PTP link)
  • it is presented as a SOHO router, and I’m not sure what amount it represents (small office is up to what ?)
I’m thinking to use another RB750g at my internet source, that will be DSL. I may use up to 3 or 4 lines, with DSL plans around 17Mbs/800kbs. So it could go up to 70Mbs down and 3,2Mbits up with some kind of L2TP tunnels (I’ll check that with ISP). At this place the routerboard may handle bandwidth aggregation, some QoS (first priority for realt-time app, VoIP for instance), and maybe some basic filtering, and bandwith control.
  • as it is not clear on online store, does it come with power supply, and what kind (PoE, jack)
  • Do you know some competitive online resellers in France ?

This is for a non-profit shared network, to a place where none DSL is available. There won’t be more than ten stations connected to the 2 APs, so probably not more than 30 people at max.

Do you think that RB750G, presented as SOHO router, is strong enough to handle this kind of purpose ? or do I have to look at RB450G.
I had a look at performance comparison document, but it’s very raw data, so I would like some comments from people who “know” that, have an opinion on that.

Thanks in advance

Best regards

Fred

For 70Mbps down I would prefer the RB450G. Much more RAM and better throughput.

The RB750G is not a bad product though. Yes, it does come with a small wall wart style power supply. They are available in US, EU, and UK versions. All you need is 12 volts DC at 500ma and 2.1mm dc power jack. And yes, POE works as well.

I wouldn’t worry about the temperature range. Many of us use these products outdoors without environmental controls.

You can find distributors and some resellers on the MT web site:

and of course with any good search engine.

Good luck,

Tom

I agree to roc-noc.com - RB750G is good board, but for usage in outdoor environment i would go for RB450G.
Console cable sometimes can be very, very useful feature
