we’re developing application level firewall and would like to provide kind of appliance using routerboards. Our only worry is if there is a chance to enhance provided RouterOS by custom functionality/package(s). So far it looks like linux with mikrotik tools on top of it, but since we’ve not touched any routerboard yet we don’t know how and if ever extensible it is.

OK! Now what about if I save all my stuff on CF/microSD, put it into RB800/RB450G. Will RouterOS allow me to start some of my application daemons on background? If so, am I even allowed to script such startup so this will be done after any reboot?

no, you cannot add custom functionality by external programs. only RouterOS Scripting…

Well, well, then, well … and what about … MetaROUTER. At least this looks like a solution to me. The big question is metarouter support for RB800 and the big question is its efficiency.

huh… actually, MetaRouter is not RouterOS =) but it can be a solution
