Just purchased mAP2nD, already broken?

Just purchased maP 2nD. Powered on following the instructions. This is what I see.

Power cable plugged in power port, no other cables plugged:

  • prw: on
  • AP/CAp: on
  • Wifi: off
  • USR: on
  • eth2: on
  • eth1: on

eth1 and eth2 are on, even if no cable is plugged.

If I plug eth1 or eth2, winbox does not detect it.

If I use the reset button as prescribed (press, plug power, keep pressed for 5 seconds), leds stay as above, and no reset occurs.

Exactly the same happens if I use the USB cable instead of the power cable.

If I plug the power cable to the poe injector, then connect the injector to eth1 or eth2, the devices does not power up.

I used other mAP 2nD before, and never had this problem.

What do you think? Is it broken? It came sealed from Amazon, as new.

Can you try netinstall ?

Definitely not normal behavior.

I can't believe it... not even if I see it...

Amazon resells a lot of refurbished RouterBOARDs, or RouterBOARDs that customers damage or misconfigure,
then return with the excuse that they don't work, then "Amazon" repackage them and resell them.

Amazon and eBay are the last places in the world where I would buy a MikroTik (and other) device...

Indeed ! Especially network gear, always from distributors with a decent reputation.

There is a well-known case of two users on this forum who had devices with the label visibly removed by hand
and reversed between the two... different devices...

They "met" by chance on the forum, looking for the MAC addresses of the devices...

There are two bootloaders on Mikrotik devices.

  1. the backup bootloader is loaded by pressing the reset button (and keeping it pressed) BEFORE inserting the power plug
  2. the main bootloader is loaded by pressing the reset button IMMEDIATELY AFTER having inserted the power plug (and keeping it pressed)

The 5 seconds might be too little a time, try keeping it pressed a bit longer.

There is - with default configuration - no access through ether1 (as it is normally the WAN/ISP port), try ether2.

But as Holvoeth stated, you should try netinstall, even if it is a PITA, before giving up.

I have experience with netinstall, and tried it here. I held the reset button, plugged in the power cord, and kept holding so long that the finger lost strength. The device is stuck. Is there a hardware button on the pcb to force reset?

I broke the seals myself.

There are no seals on MikroTik devices, NO SEALS...

I already bought several mAP (and mAP Lite). As far as I know, those boxes are NOT sealed (edit: and confirmed by Rex. It's a fact that I have never seen seals on any of the MT devices I already bought).
If yours were, that's maybe also an indication ?
I don't know, just guessing.

Anyhow, if netinstall doesn't work, ship it back to vendor.

I meant in the package; since 2007, there's never been a seal on an original product...
So the seal could actually be a way to mislead and abuse the buyer's trust...

And then, even if we pretend the seal is applied, what's the point? The distributor can applying another one...

A DOA device can always happen, and (only as anecdata) personally (but I am an optimist, besides being cheap) I buy used stuff on e-bay (from both private and professional sellers) quite often and I never had issues.

I would be more careful with Amazon paradoxically because of their "no questions asked return policy" I have seen several reports about sellers that only quickly visually inspect a return for evident tampering and then put it back on sale.

I have a couple brand new mAP handy and can confirm that the box has NO seal BUT the device itself is actually sort of wrapped in a protective (transparent, lightly adhesive) plastic that could be considered a factory seal (it covers besides the upper white plastic also the sides, so you need to remove it or at least partially lift it to access the ports).

Perhaps they meant film, since on my mAP the glossy plastic of the case is covered with film, like phone screens.

It should also by default offer a wireless SSID starting with “Mikrotik-”. Do you see it?

The fact the WiFi light is off suggests it is faulty or non-original.
