kernel missing - netinstall fails

Hi - I have several RB532’s with this same problem.

when booting from NAND they show a “kernel missing” error
When trying to use netinstall they resolve IP and Mac Address of netinstall but then just a long line of *******
Netinstall doesn’t show any signs of connecting (yes net booting is enabled and the IP address the RB resolves is the one set in the net booting options)

I have the RB532 connected via a crossover cable directly to the computer with netinstall on it.

Any Ideas would be greatly appreciated
below is what appears on the console port during boot

RouterBOOT booter 1.4
RouterBoard 532
CPU Frequency: 266Mhz
Memory size: 32MB

Press any key within 1 second to enter setup.
trying bootp protocol…
Got IP address: 192.168.0.101
resolve mac address 00:0F:BO:99:64:1A

Make sure you have used netisntall designed for the RB500,
http://www.mikrotik.com/download/netinstall-2.9.31-ns.exe

Yes Sergejs, That is what I am attempting to use

PC IP is statically set to 192.168.0.250/24 and the netboot option is set to hand out 192.168.0.101. I have set the RB532 to boot from ethernet and to use bootp. is that correct?

try enable to pxe boot…

Thanks for the tip Balimore - I only wish I understood it ;( Appologies for my ignorance - is this something on the Windows box that needs to be turned on?

OK - so I tried using a different Windows machine (XP-Pro) but not patched recently.

The Netinstall gets as far as
Formatting disk…
FATAL ERROR: bad network connection
Press ENTER to reboot

This has been seen before..
Use a “dumb, stupid, slow” card in the windows machine..
Some NICs detect a disconnect from the RB durring the NetInstall process and will drop the connection perminantly..

I keep an old Xircom CE2 arround for my laptop (it allwasy works..)

In short try another “host”.. it will work..

Another thing to try is to use a switch between the “host” and the RB..

The comment about the “old slow” ethernet is valid. If you can go to your PC device manager and set the port to 10 half duplex and have a good cable, this should work.

Thanks for the tip Mike - I tried setting the onboard realtek to 10M half and full duplex with same results - popped in an old 3Com Superstack 10M hub inbetween for good measure - still the same.

Just Tried it using an old PII Laptop with 10M Xircom PCMCIA NIC (with and without 10M hub in between) - all the same results.

I must be missing something here - really driving me crazy now…
