I attempted an upgrade yesterday to RouterOS 2.9.14. When the machine attempted to reboot, it didn’t. I was unable to gain any access to the machine, including using the console port.
This morning I’ve pulled the router out of the rack and attached it to a monitor to watch what happens. The POST clears fine, the BIOS loads and then when it starts to boot the OS it gives the following error:
Loading system with initrd
Uncompressing Linux…Ok, booting the kernel
execve:00000002
Kernel Panic: Attempted to kill init!
I’m using the IDE module and I’m not sure how to go about rescuing this problem, if it can be rescued.
I find the words used during reinstall to be a bit confusing.
First the installer will say something like:
This will erase everything on the disk. Continue?
You have to press “Yes”. Then it says:
Keep old configuration?
It may be best to ask the questions in the opposite order. Ask if they want to keep old configuration FIRST, and then warn that it will erase the disk SECOND. When it warns that it will erase the whole disk, it will confuse people that are worried about their old configuration and do not know ahead of time that the configuration question will be asked next.
I agree 100%. When I first started the reinstall I saw the message about erasing everything, which prompted me to come back here to be sure I would get to keep my config. Having the option to save the old configuration first would have saved me some heartbeats at least.
