What kind of keyboard layout do you expect from RouterOS?
spanish or similar keyboard ![]()
in default i can’t write ? or = without missing. I have to check many times to be sure i’m writing what i want :S
RouterOS console doesn’t support these special characters, so there is no use in having a keyboard layout for it. It will not be shown correctly, so better stick with a-z and 0-9
How can we change the keyboard layout to azerty (Belgium)?
RouterOS does not have such option to change keyboard layout.
What is the practical reason to use such output?
While you can’t write from console with a non-latin keyboard layout, you CAN write with any keyboard layout from Winbox. In console, the bytes will be shown as a "", followed by the byte’s hex code.
If you need to target such strings from a script/terminal though, you must write the escaped sequence (with the "" and all…), making these extremely inconvenient to use.
I’d recommend using non-latin strings only in comments or other similar places, that you won’t be targeting later on.
What is the practical reason to use such output?
Convenience for people whos’ native language is using a non-latin alphabet, duh.
Like, I write my clients’ names in Cyrillic, because that’s my and their native alphabet. Transliterating those with latin letters just feels wrong, and makes reading awkward.
RouterOS console does not special characters, commands do not consists of special characters, scripts do not accept special characters.
Perhaps Winbox or even better Webfig is better solution. Webfig allows you to customise interface to any other language.
When you use a Mikrotik Routerboard device, you’re absolutely correct. But when you want to buy a license (using the ISO), you have to do everything by hand. Before you use webfig or winbox, you have to configure an IP address, gateway, route etc.
In Belgium, we use the AZERTY keyboard. And there are lot’s of differences when you compare with QUERTY. So maybe it isn’t such a bad idea?
And what about the Arabs or Chinese? Japanese layout would be also useful for some users. Honestly it’s administrator’s fault if he does not know where are the letters on the keyboard.
actually even on a freshly installed x86 machine, you can connect with Winbox over MAC address and configure from Winbox. Direct keyboard access is a pretty rare situation
That works only when it’s in the same network, isn’t it?
I want to configure a machine that’s about 100km from my computer (in a datacenter).
