I was wondering, what if we begin a Kickstarter project to support the development and bug fixing for a new dude release ? Maybe, Mikrotik itself could stabilish a value for funding and hire new programmers for it and we could make a list of desirable functions and implementations. This way, the dude can continue with its current model (free of charge + closed source) and we could support it´s development as a community.

Seems like an interesting idea. But I’m sure mikrotik won’t go for it.

I’ve said before, I wish they would charge for it. I’d pay and so would many others.

I would for one donate to it… would be nice to hear back from Normunds or one of the others at MK on this…

Mikrotik should continue the Dude project imo. But to be honest since I stopped using it (too many bugs and no further development) I started using Zenoss then Zabbix. Zabbix is the thing you want to have as monitoring service in your network (3000+ machines and no problems). Dude is simple, Zabbix is not. Zabbix has also many many more monitoring options.

I would like to bring this post in evidence again. Lets make a Crowdsourcing campaing to support our beloved dude !

Dude isn’t really all that simple. And dude has that something that others don’t. I wasn’t able to switch to anything else for many years now for some reason…

Hello,

I would be happy if The DUDE will be continued but also split to two versions!

  • One version as it is, as a program I mean and this for free!
  • And one version based on a Linux distribution that can be installed on a single x_86 machine and must be paid

So money comes in and for smaller networks or plain home usage the free version will be enough
and for greater networks we all get a really good solution that is not based on a windows based pc
but more professional for 24/7/365 running.

  • Alix single boards (small)
  • Soekris boards middle
  • Separate Server or Server hardware based for huge networks

License fee 100 € and it will be enough for MikroTik to hire 2 dedicated
or free programmers to maintain The DUDE for a long future.

The license fee can easily shorten from the tax by the most of us and should not be the problem.

I would be very happy if Mikrotik will hear the users.
Mikrotik has great peace of software that currently wasted.
I’m asking myself why say no for the money?

Also I tried to ask Mikrotik a few changes that I’m willing to pay for in RouterOS and the Dude. Guess what. the answer was no.

I wish I had the knowledge to write something similar.
All I can bring is money.

Good luck to us all.
