L2TP-IPSec can't resolve names

Hello all,

I’ve set up a RB2011 as a VPN server (L2TP-IPSec) and can succesfully connect to it using either Win7 or Android. The only problem I’m having is that while i can ping and reach everything in the network (while connected via L2TP) i cannot use netbios names.

For example, my NAS has IP 192.168.88.13. If i do \192.168.88.13 in Win7, it will open the nas and show me the folders. However, if I try to do the same thing, using a name \nas then it doens’t work, saying it can’t find the location.

I tried specifying the Rb2011 as DNS server for this, but this doens’t matter. I did put the interface to which the NAS is connected on porxy-arp. I also tried running a own DNS server (Simple DNS +) and configured this server as the default DNS server in the L2TP PPP profile. This didn’t work (although i suspect the server was configured faulty).

Is this something small i’m missing? Could someone help out, greatly appreciated!
If i need to post screens/configs let me know please.

WINS server is required for tihs to work over multiple L3 subnets.

Thanks, i’ve been reading about this, seems like it’s the only way to go.

Which gives a new question, although it isn’t related to the router.

Is there a way to run a WINS server on a Win7 machine? All the pages i’ve read so far seem to use a Windows Server version. Is there a way or should I start using Windows Server?
