L3HW and PPPOe

Hello,

Right now I use CRS317 for switching and RB5009 for routing for a 5Gbps fiber connection. Since the RB5009 has only one SFP+ port it is configured as a RoaS, it works very well. I would like to explore the option to use the CSR317 as a router as well, hoping that the performance with L3HW will be enough to support the ISP rate above. (Yes, I know that CRS317 is a powerful switch - not designed to be a powerful router). My questions are as follows:

  • Does PPPOE benefit from L3HW? The WAN port on which PPPOE is defined is HW offloaded, however routing is performed from/to the PPPOE interface which is not (?) HW offloaded
  • If not, will PPPOE offloading be supported in the future?
  • What is the performance impact of PPPOE compared to DHCP on the WAN side?

Preliminary benchmarks I have done with CRS317 indicate that the CPU maxes out at ~1.3Gbps. PPPOE is mandatory in my case.

Thanks
