LAN-Gateway on DELL R200

Hi there,

I need to build a router (with firewall capabilites) that seperates two LANs and offers one port for a commonly used zone (a server accessed by both LANs).

I’am currently looking into a DELL R200 to do this, because of the on-site service and pricing is ok.

  • I figured (from this forum) that R200 is running well with ROS, any complaints here?
  • What CPU (speed and type) should I choose, if all ports should be able to run 1 Gbit/s. Is a Core2Duo good enough or should I go with Xeon? I would add the Intel Quad-Port Adapter.
  • 1GB is enough or should I go with 2GB memory?
  • Is the R200 (or R300) able to handle a internal USB-DOM?
  • Is such a configuration able to handle wire-speed?

Do I missed something?

EDIT: Or should I go with RouterBoard 1000? It seems that I can get two RB1000 for the price of one DELL R200?

Thanks for your help.

Rb1000 is a better solution to do this, I think.

R200 too ! but is more expensive.

The rb1000 has not movile parts like HD, then the possibility of faults by hardware are minor than r200.
