I saw, when playing around with The Dude, that it could add Layer 2 information to device discovery. What exactly can it find? I want to be able to not only map the devices, but I would love to be able to map what switch they are on, and subsequently what port on said switch. Is this possible with The Dude?
Check out switchmap on sourceforge, it has more features and will come in handy for doing switchport inventory, days since last used and tracking mac/ip/port mapping. The functionality you are asking about is not already in the dude and even if you somehow configured a very basic version it would not be good enough.
