Lhg almost dead! no winbox no reset no access and rebooting when connecting lan

hi guys!
i tried resetting lhg without succes.
Then i tried connecting via winbox. no success.
Then i tried with netinstall on 2 different pc and nothing happened.

I saw that connecting to the lan cable the lhgg tries to get the connection but with no result.
is it time to put this device on the garbage?

Netinstall can be tricky, depending if you are running it on WIndows or Linux there may be a trick or two that you haven’t tried yet.
The most common one (valid for both Windows and Linux) is to interpose between the PC and the Mikrotik a “dumb” switch, as sometimes this helps (be it timing, caching or whatever) to make the netinstall see the device.

thanks for the reply..
i tried also with an Hap ac connected to the lhg.. but on winbox is not showing anything by mac adress even if i see a “R” next to the port where i’m connected to.
Can i try the same approach on netinstall?

Sure you can, in the worst case it won’t change anything.

If your device is not detected by Winbox at L2 (MAC) or L3 (IP) the device is very likely not booting properly (it does boot somehow as it senses the ethernet conneciton).

Then your ONLY possible way out is netinstall.

In some cases netinstall with direct connection between the PC and the MIkrotik device fails in detecting the device, and in these cases it has been reported several times that inserting a “dumb” switch between the PC and the Mikrotik helps.

The hap ac cannot be considered a “dumb” switch, so I doubt that it can be of any help.

tried with linux.. and same problem as the win or macos ..
the ip it’s getting is quite strange..

ip by lan 169.254.144.77

resetting procedure holding reset by 5 secs and pluggin in the cable is not working.

It is not strange. it is quite normal in some cases.
169.254.x.y are so-called APIPA addresses, it usually means that your PC expects to be given an IP address by a DHCP server, but none is running on the network so the PC tries desperately to have one and “invents” that.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Link-local_address

Anyway the reset procedure is not “Holding reset for five seconds and plugging the cable”, it is either:

  1. unplug cable, wait some 10 seconds, hold reset pressed, plug cable keeping pressed the reset button for “enough time”
    or:
  2. unplug cable, wait some 10 seconds, re-plug cable and immediately press reset and keep it pressed for “enough time”

The difference in the two methods is only that either the backup or the main bootloader will be used.
The “enough time” depends on the device and the bootloader, but the led should help as it should start flashing, and only then you release the reset button:

On some devices it can be tricky to get the right timing and/or positively keep the button pressed.

For netinstall, you keep the reset button pressed until the led (after having flashed and having become lighted solid) switches itself off. (it should take about 10-15 seconds after the led started flashing).

For netinstall, KEEP it pressed until it appears. Works for me better then counting seconds.

done it both via windows and via linux..
the problem still exists…

i finished all the standard approaches…

With all due respect, you haven’t reported doing the “normal” things that were suggested to you, before attempting this particular/unusual approach.
It would make more sense to exhaust all the usual method first.

But Patrick did detail what he did, so that should be perfectly repeatable on a Linux machine, which kind of help do you need?

Also with the “dumb” switch interposed?

If you hock the device up to a pc with Linux and run like wireshark or tcpdump, to determind if the device has some ip traffic on the ethernet port.
Will be more informant to the community and MikroTik. To see if the device is very ded or just senile  . Don’t give up.

i will try it.. but connected to the hap ac of mikrotik i see RX and TX on ethernet port..

Also, try without forcing the 192.168.88.1 address, maybe that is the issue, the LHG has not (anymore) that IP address.

According to tangent (who is extremely reliable in his reports) all is needed is

since i see it from the hap..
is it possible to give it a fixed ip adress and enter via hap …? so entering the router then → lhgg ?

No.

You could install a netinstall server on another (more powerful than the the hap) Mikrotik device in a container if you want to make things complicated or explore new, strange ways to do things:

But - AGAIN - you should first (before proposing new, crazy ideas) try what is suggested and is known to have - generally - worked in similar cases.

ok.. again i will trying with linux.. from the beginning..
i don’t have a “dumb” switch to use..

It can be an old 10/100 Mbit only one, if you haven’t got one you can ask friends if they have one and borrow it, or even if you buy a new one it will be a few Euros.

Or you can try using an old (DSL) router, the 4 (usually yellow) LAN ports act usually as a 4 port switch.

is the Switch TP-Link TL-SG1005P a “dumb” switch?

Yes.
(though it has PoE, it is a plain, unmanaged switch)
