If I use several MikroTik-RB’s as Hotspots, and want a central user database for all I have to use the UserManager, right?
As I see Level 4 License means: 20 Users concurrent (on the hotspot, as the hotspot uses UserManager).
So - no matter how many RouterBoards I use in my Hotspot - all these Hotspots are limited to 20 Users concurrent?
If yes I need a higher License level - do I need that on the RB running UserManager only?
The licence restriction is on the amount of active users at any time on /ip hotspot active (for online hotspot users) which is 200
The usermanager restriction for the same licence is 20 users
So if your limit is 20 users on a level 4 licence, all of your routers combined will only be able to have a max of 20 online users because this is all that your central user-manager will allow for.
Hope this helps!
Edit: The hotspot allows 200 users on a level 4 licence while the user-manager itself only allows 20.
Thank you for your informations, not sure I got it right …
The user manager is basically a radius server running on one router only …
so is this really ‘20 per router l4’ or an overall limit of 20 users (per user manager, which is on one node only)
AND:
if one user connects with a laptop, a smartphone and a tablet (using the same login) - does this count as 3 users or as one?
Thanks again, hope you could help me on that.
Regards, Florian.
Yes, as long as you only need those users on one RB. I need several RB’s accessing the same user database. Therefore I need a radius server, and the only radius server I know running on RB is the UserManager. Am I wrong?
Hi, I’m sorry, the late approvement of my posts mixed things up a bit - so I have to ask again:

User Manager doesn’t always run on the same device as the hotspot. Of course if it does, even though Hotspot would allow 200 active users with L4 license, Usermanager only allows 20, so it will stop at that.
Thanks, I saw the document but needed clarification.
This means - as I have one UserManager for several Hotspots, all of them may have 20 concurrent users.
What about the same user logging in from multiple devices? (Laptop, Smartphone, Tablet)
Do they count as one user or as 3 users?
Unfortunately no, User Manager limits connections to it’s database. So if you have 20 hotspot servers, and only one user from each - User Manager will hit it’s limit.
Yes, User Manager counts total active sessions, it doesn’t matter if username is the same. Basically this means that for normal UM operation, the UM server needs L6 license
Thanks, got it now. This means the Hotspot-System get’s more expensive then necessary.
Is there a way to roam Hotspot users (the 200 User Limit which applies to Hotspot Users) without using UM?
Only alternative I see so far is using an external radius server.
Yes, running an external (freeware) RADIUS might be a cheaper solution. If you need a centralized database for roaming the users, there is really no other way. UM is a simple RADIUS server anyway.
Sorry but we don’t offer license discounts. However, some distrubutors offer better prices than official mikrotik webpage. for example http://www.mikrotik-routeros.net
That’s why for me the hAPax3 (which has L6 license) is the only affordable solution so far for UM and wifi Radius authentication. (Plenty of power and memory, just disable the wifi if in a closet)
These days I see the average number of mobile devices carried by a single family has gone up from 5 to 8, in 2 years time.
All their devices (smartphone, tablet, smartwatch, Xbox,…) connect without intervention when in reach of the wifi network, if they have stored username/password.
L4 limit is actually 19, not 20. And then you need a spare for wifi roaming.
Counting here is with Radius accounting. So send accounting to a different Radius server, or just disable it.
Wifi authentication is just a split second action. The session can last very long.
And accounting COA with Mikrotik AP does not work anyway. Sessions are requested to stop, but the Mikrotik NAS (AP) does not handle that request.
Tried to set up a redundant UM with 2 hAPax3, but failed. There is no synchronisation AFAIK or could find.
With User Manager not advancing. Old problems remain actual.
Try changing profiles, try (profile) imit overview by user … on your screen there is then still “not implemented yet”.
Somebody copied User Manager from somewhere, and that person disappeared?
