License upgrade failure

Hello,
I have upgraded three devices at one site from 3.27 to 4.8 I can connect to them OK but cannot get the license key to update. I have tried on a number of occasions

ON connection the license needs updating screen appears but when I try to update it keeps saying:
‘Fetching information’
‘connecting to http://www.mikrotik.com…’ It then sits for some time and comes up with
'License updating: failed: followed by a heap of weird hieroglyphics

Trying from System>license>update gives ‘connecting to mikrotik.com’ sits for a while and then comes up with ‘failed:’

I can connect perfectly to http://www.mikrotik.com from my workstation and can ping http://www.mikrotik.com successfully from a terminal on each device (433, 133 and crossroads boards) connected through a VPN.

Any suggestions would be appreciated as I have a limited time to update the licenses.

I am not sure how you are connected or what you are using for the license upgrade. I have done hundreds of license upgrades on customer RouterBoards.

First of all, I use Winbox to upgrade licenses. The computer running winbox must have a route to www.mikrotik.com. i.e. it must be pingable.

The target RouterBoard does not need a route. You can be connected by MAC address.

You should upgrade the ROS license while it is running 3.25 or later. Open “system license” and select the “Update License Key” button.

You probably should have done this while running 3.27 before upgrading to 4.8.

If you can’t get this to work, try downgrading to 3.27 and try it again. Then upgrade to 4.8.

no problem doing it on v4.8 or newer. just make sure you have https access to mikrotik.com from that PC.

It is all very strange. I have updated a large number of remote devices using the same VPN previously using 4.2 from this location - no problems at all.

The devices I have been trying to update are varied - 100 and 400 series boards which are all at the same remote location. I can connect from my workstation here and update to 4.9 but not upgrade the license on any device at that location regardless of doing it before or after upgrading to 4.9

I can connect from here to mikrotik.com using both http and https.

I have now circumvented the problem by activating the licenses from another location - using the same VPN. Everything updated fine. It would appear to be something to do with the ADSL connection here but affects only devices at the one location. Very weird.

It would appear that if I want to do any further license upgrade at that location I will have to do it from another site :frowning:
