License Upgrades/Newbie help in general.

Hello to all. I am new here and to MikroTik in general, although I have learned a lot lately about it.

Jumping straight into my question, where I work we use two MikroTik routers. One is PC based serving as an initial gateway/firewall, and the second is a inner office gateway that is running on a 230 board and has some firewall properties running on it.

All in all I am extremely new to all of this. What I do know is that they are both RouterOS version 2.8. We also have a spare 433 board in the office. What I have come to the conclusion on is that the 433 board is not going to accept any easy ‘backup’ configuration to be loaded in it from the other two routers. I have used ftp to upload back up files from the other two routers, but am assuming that because the 433 board is running version 3.22 it will not accept the files as valid backup files to be loaded.

So my question is what to do in order to have a backup routerboard on hand, and to also replace the PC based router. I have noticed that from searching around that the 230 boards are being replaced by others? It seems that the 433 board is all that we would need, and so I am thinking that I will want to start using it. This would require ‘upgrading’, or actually just purchasing new licenses, and I am not sure exactly what level of license I need.

So, my main question, with all other questions in mind, is how would I figure out what level (4, 5, or 6) license I need? Is there a way to tell from my current license what I am using as it relates to the differences in license levels? For example, the different amount of tunnels that are being used, so on and so forth?

Thanks for the help. I hope this is not to vague, and if it is, please ask any questions that might help you give a concise answer to my situation.

  1. why do you need to replace the RB230, it’s a good device
  2. no, the backup file will not directly be accepted, you need to reconfigure the new router to do the same tasks as the old one.

There is no need to replace as of yet. I would just like to have something on hand that is already configured so its a swap out in case something were to happen. We rely heavily on the routers in our process, not just for web surfing. It would be a huge anxiety attack on me if something were to happen and it took a while to get the original configuration back up.

I am very new to all of this, so I can bet a proficient IT person could do it in a manner of hours. And, I know the basics well enough to get us back up and running quick enough, but I like to avoid stress when at all possible.

I did a /export of both routers configurations. I am going to assume that this would give me a ‘road map’ if I were to have a complete crash and could not get in and see the configurations from a terminal? They are both pretty basic in their set up, and a quick interface configuration and address configuration would get us back up and running.

I figured out the level I would need, so that is taken care of. Like I said, I am new.

If there is some way easier to enter the configuration from the current routers to the spare router, other than hand typing each aspect, I would like to know.

Thanks for the help.
