Licensing and first activation?

I’m considering switching from some Cisco small business equipment to MikroTik.

It looks like Version 6.0 is approaching production ready (at least within six months).

If I buy a RB2011L-RM with a Level4 license:

  • Does it can I start off with my base version being 6.0?
  • Does that depend on what’s pre-installed on the router, or do I have to activate the license in some way?

Basically, I’m in no rush to upgrade, so I’d rather wait to buy when 6.0 is stable (so my license can cover v7.0 in the long-term).

However, if I can buy now and start with 6.0 (or hold off activating until 6.0 is out) that’d work too.

It depends on what is pre-installed on the board. Have a look here at the licensing information.

I have an Rb951-2n (with L4 license) that states it is upgradable to 7.x.

I would guess that it also would be upgradable to 7.x (due to the timeframe the hardware was released) but someone else with a RB2011L-RM should be able to verify for you.

Ah awesome – thanks! Maybe I’ll go ahead and buy a RB2011L-RM and see what the license page says.
