hello guys i lost a routerboard and 2 wireless card during lighting storm hit the omni directily
thr RB112 has been gone
do you think guys that i should change the omni or just keep it?
- Please check the physical of the antenna, is it burn or not. You can check with the multitester.
- Have you installed lightning arrester (between antenna and MT) and grounding systems.
- In my experience, there is no problem with the antenna when got lighting because it is passive componen.
I think the omni is gone because being hit by direct lightning, why you keep it?
Omni is like < $100 how much is your time worth trying to find out play safe replace

there was no surge protector
i installed now surge protector but i istalled it upside down is that will effect? the bulkhead side to antenna using N Bulkhead to N
“polarization” (lol) of the rf surge protector doesn’t matter just as long as its between the radiating element and transceiver.

Remember that a surge protector will not protect you against a DIRECT strike. NOTHING will protect your equipment from a direct strike.
What the surge protector will save you from is near by strikes.
We had a Hyperlink 15dB omni get hit directly once, several years ago. It was hooked to a 1W hyperlink amplifier and Orinoco AP-1000 access point.
It fried ALL of the equipment, and actually blew the collinear element sideways out through the fiberglass body! Straight out the side! We keep the antenna around just to show people what can happen in a direct lightning strike.
And for the record, I’d replace everything on the tower. Cables, pigtails, CAT5. Everything.
Once you’ve been hit, you can never trust anything that’s up there - the next time you have a problem, you’ll be wondering “Well, this was up here in the strike - maybe it failed? or maybe that failed?”. You’ll save yourself a lot of time and headache just replacing the whole thing.
If an omni antenna takes a direct hit, the top of the antenna will come apart or the fiberglass radome will splinter. If either of those happened you should replace the antenna. If it were me I would replace the antenna without question.
Surge arrestor were never designed to withstand a direct lightning strike. That’s why you should have an air terminal installed a few feet higher than your omni so the omni wouldnt get a direct hit. Also make sure you have a low resistance and impedance ground conductor to conduct the lightning down. Some of the ESD will inevitably hit your equipment. That’s the surge arrestor’s job to prevent the charge from frying your equipment.
Make sure the omni is DC grounded. I have a few pacwireless 12db omni’s still up and when a storm moves thru I loose a card from near misses. My problem is antennas. I just havent had time to replace them. But I will sooner or later.
