Our tower recently or something nearby got hit by lightning and the surge came in through our cheap PoE injectors and killed a fair bit of equipment. The PoE injectors have obvious scorch and burn marks inside, but the ethernet cable at the ground at least looks fine - since we have a lot of outdoor Cat5 in use, is it possible that this could be re-used even after it carried a surge current? It would really be a pain to have to redo all our cabling, especially since a lot of other installations on the tower are blocking the cables in places.
Lesson learned… don’t think lightning won’t hit you just because you rarely get ground strikes!
hai,
yes i did remember, last 18 months ago i had strike on my antenna, and all my client goes down at -89~-91 and my cm9 is gone and pinging to ap[RB511] have reply 1ms than 3000ms than 2ms than 2000ms blah...blah....
and i had action, must change wireless card and made system reset only
and now i have -55~-63 average from client
As long as the current wasn’t enough to melt insulation and cause a short the cable should be just fine. A simple test with a cable tester can detect any shorts.
