Does anybody have any tips on installation and lightning prevention. I just started using this product approx 45 days ago. I’m using the SXT 5HnD, Sextant & OmniTik-U 5Hnd. These are mounted on 110 ft towers. So far I’ve had 6 of these radios loosed their Lan Ports, They still power up but the Lan Ports are out. They are all plugged into Panamax AC Surge Protection
GOOD GROUNDING on the towers! And then EVEN BETTER GROUNDING on the towers!!! Without great tower grounding, nothing else matters.
Look on Polyphaser, install lightning arrestors both on LAN and RF ports and as someone said…good grounding is the key
Agree to the above, and here is some more info on grounding basics: http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Manual:Grounding
I agree with the tower grounding, but not the MT grounding in some cases. My Mikrotik router is still on the roof of a 22 story condo, and still functioning great. No problems for the last 4 years in the heart of Lightning Country.
There is a catch. The router assembly is within a couple meters of a lightning rod, but the antenna is higher than the lightning rod. The router assembly has no path to ground. That is correct, no path to ground anywhere. The mount is electrically isolated from the roof, the power is solar and the signal in and out is radio. No grid-tie power connection. No CAT5 cable. No problem. ![]()
Interested in how it works? Watch this video. This guy is repairing a live 250,000VAC power line from a platform on a helicopter.
