Link between boats

Hello,

I want to set up a link between two sail boats, but I’m not sure what will be better, 2.4 or 5Ghz. In theory, with 5Ghz the Fresnel zone will be smaller, but the water will drain less power with 2.4Ghz… To make the things worse the antennas are only 1.5 meters above the sea level (the top of the mast is not an option  ) and can’t be very big, maximum 60cm.

My initial idea is to use RB411 with ~8dbi omni antennas (15 degrees vertical beam width) and XtremeRange cards in 2.4 or 5Ghz locked to the minimum speed. The speed is not an issue, stability and distance are the main goals.

Do you think that the link will work properly? Can someone give me some tips?

Thank you.

how far do you need the link to work?

2-3 km would be great, but 1 km will be ok.

If you can install both antennas at the same height above water level on the both boats, you can use a higher gain omni antenna.
I think 802.11b will work best here.

use B or 5Mhz channel and 12dBi omni. It should work for 3KM.
